Description
Originally published in 1973, The Log of Rubin the Sailor tells the story of Charles Rubin who spent four decades at sea. A leader of the Marine Workers Industrial Union and the National Maritime Union, Rubin also served in the Navy in World War I and as a merchant marine until 1948. This new edition of The Log of Rubin the Sailor includes a Foreword by Carlo Gentile, a member of the Seafarers International Union. Gentile outlines many of the challenges workers in the maritime industry face today—challenges we can only face through collective action.
Rubin splices together a warm, personal tale of the struggles at sea and ashore to build a fighting union, the NMU. His story is a meaningful bridge between yesterday’s labor history and the challenges unions face today.
