Description
Originally published in 1934, Hugo Gellert’s Capital In Lithographs has been out of print for decades. International Publishers is proud and honored to make this collection available to a new generation of readers.
Hugo Gellert, considered a “revolutionary artist,” contributed to The Masses, The Liberator, and other socialist and communist publications. A dedicated antifascist and member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA), he devoted his life and art to the struggle for African American equality and Black liberation, workers’ rights, internationalism, and socialism.
At one time considered a celebrity of sorts, Gellert was sidelined during the McCarthy era Red Scare, and he is largely forgotten today. Capital in Lithographs provides a brief introduction to Marx‘s Capital, as well as several works by Gellert that reflect class conscious, people’s art, and the socialist realism of the 1930s.
This new edition of Capital In Lithographs includes a new Introduction by Sander Feinberg, a writer and independent researcher whose work focuses on education, antifascism, and Hungarian-American history. It also includes a new Foreword by Paul Buhle, retired Senior Lecturer at Brown University. Buhle has written widely on the history of the US Left, including Marxism in the United States; he is co-editor of the Encyclopedia of the American Left and editor of more than twenty non-fiction, historical graphic novels.
